DOCtronic Coil-on-Plug COP Kit Honda OBD1 / OBD2 ECUs B-Series P28 P30
Product Overview
The DOCtronic Coil-on-Plug COP Kit is a modern ignition upgrade for Honda ECU platforms originally equipped with distributor ignition. It is designed to convert the factory distributor-based ignition system to individual Coil-on-Plug ignition, giving each cylinder its own dedicated ignition coil.
This system is suitable for Honda OBD1, OBD2A and OBD2B ECU applications, depending on the selected COP version. It is commonly used on Honda B-Series, D-Series, H-Series and F-Series performance builds, especially with popular ECU platforms such as P28, P30 and other compatible Honda ECUs.
For modified Honda engines, the factory distributor system can become a weak point, especially in high-RPM, high-compression, turbocharged or track-driven applications. The DOCtronic COP conversion helps modernize the ignition system while keeping the familiar Honda ECU-based platform.
The kit is available in COP1 and COP2 versions. COP1 is the internal ECU version for many standard OBD1 ECU applications, while COP2 is the external module version for OBD2A, OBD2B and special or unusual OBD1 ECU layouts.
What the Kit Does
The DOCtronic COP system removes the need for the distributor to handle spark delivery.
The distributor remains installed only as a cam angle reference, while spark delivery is handled by four individual smart ignition coils. This means the factory distributor cap, rotor, internal ignition coil and ignition module are no longer used for ignition output.
By converting to Coil-on-Plug ignition, the engine benefits from a cleaner ignition layout, reduced dependence on ageing distributor components and improved reliability for demanding performance applications.
This upgrade is especially useful for turbo Honda builds, high-revving naturally aspirated engines, trackday cars, time attack projects and serious street cars where ignition stability is important.
COP1 and COP2 Options / Versions
COP1 Version: COP1 is the internal ECU version of the DOCtronic Coil-on-Plug system. The control board is installed inside the ECU and provides four individual ignition outputs for smart ignition coils.
This version is the most suitable choice for many standard Honda OBD1 ECU applications, including common B-Series P28 and P30 setups.
COP2 Version: COP2 is the external module version of the DOCtronic Coil-on-Plug system. It is designed for OBD2A, OBD2B and special or unusual OBD1 ECU layouts where the internal COP1 board is not the ideal solution.
The COP2 module is installed outside the ECU case and wired to the ECU board. It is a better option when the ECU board layout or vehicle platform does not suit the internal COP1 installation.
* For the compatibility of the COP2 modules please check the installation instruction. ![]()
Which Version Should You Choose?
Choose COP1 if your setup uses a standard compatible Honda OBD1 ECU, such as many P28 or P30 applications.
Choose COP2 if your setup uses an OBD2A ECU, OBD2B ECU or a special OBD1 ECU board where the external module version is required.
If you are not sure which version fits your ECU, contact JDMaster before ordering. We can help identify the correct option based on your ECU code, engine setup and wiring configuration.

Why Upgrade from the Factory Distributor?
The original Honda distributor ignition system works well on standard engines, but it can become a limitation as the engine setup becomes more demanding.
Distributor caps, rotors, ignition modules and internal ignition coils are wear items. As these parts age, they can cause misfires, weak spark, unstable ignition performance or reliability issues.
On turbocharged, high-compression or high-revving VTEC engines, the ignition system has to work harder. A Coil-on-Plug conversion gives each cylinder its own ignition coil, creating a stronger and more modern ignition platform for serious performance use.
This makes the DOCtronic COP kit a smart upgrade for customers who want to improve ignition reliability while keeping their Honda ECU-based setup.
Compatible Applications
This kit is suitable for many Honda performance applications using compatible ECU platforms, including:
Honda B-Series engines
B16, B18 and B20 builds
Honda Civic B-Series swaps
Honda CRX B-Series swaps

Installation Requirements
Professional installation is strongly recommended.
The COP1 version requires installation of the control board inside the ECU. The COP2 version is mounted outside the ECU and requires wiring to the ECU board.
The original ignition signal going from the ECU to the factory distributor ignition module must be removed or disconnected.
The distributor remains installed only for cam angle reference. The distributor cap, rotor, factory coil and ignition module are no longer required for spark delivery.
For best results, installation should be carried out by a technician familiar with Honda ECU wiring, ignition systems and performance engine management.
Important Notes
Resistor-type spark plugs must be used.
Non-resistor spark plugs can cause electrical interference and ECU operation issues.
Correct ECU identification is important before ordering.
The correct COP version depends on the ECU board type and vehicle wiring.
Professional ECU and wiring knowledge is required for proper installation.
Plug-n-Play and DIY versions include different parts, so the correct option must be selected before ordering.
JDMaster Recommendation
- At JDMaster, we recommend the DOCtronic COP conversion for Honda owners who want to modernize their ignition system while keeping a Honda ECU-based platform.
